Hi @tampakit,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing issues connecting your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 scanner via USB and are getting a "cannot connect" message, here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Basic Troubleshooting Steps:

Check USB Connection:

  • Ensure the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and your computer.
  • Try using a different USB port on your computer.

Restart Devices:

  • Power off both your computer and the printer.
  • Disconnect the USB cable from both ends.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect the USB cable firmly.
  • Power on the printer first, then the computer.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Outdated or corrupted drivers can cause connectivity issues. Ensure you have the latest printer drivers installed.
  • Visit the HP Support website, enter your printer model (OfficeJet Pro 7740), and download the latest drivers and software.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • This utility can diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems automatically.
  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to check for issues and follow the prompts to fix any problems found.

Check Device Manager (Windows):

  • Press Windows + X keys and select "Device Manager."
  • Look for any yellow exclamation marks next to your printer under "Imaging devices" or "Print queues."
  • Right-click on the device and select "Update driver" to install any available updates.

Restart Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) Service:

  • Press Windows + R to open the Run dialog box.
  • Type services.msc and press Enter.
  • Scroll down and locate "Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)" service.
  • Right-click on it and select "Restart."

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
