I can not copy and past a scanned document or photo to a Word document after it is saved by me.

Hi @jake9926

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

When you scan a document or photo using the HP App, the file is usually saved as an image (JPEG/PNG) or PDF. These formats don’t allow direct text selection and copy-paste into Word unless the file has been processed with Optical Character Recognition (OCR). That’s why you’re unable to copy and paste text from your scanned file.

Here are the steps to resolve this:

Check the Scan Format

  • Open the HP App.
  • Go to Scan Settings before scanning.
  • Select PDF (Searchable) if available. This option uses OCR so the text can be copied into Word.
  • If you only save as JPEG/PNG, the file will remain an image and text cannot be copied.

Enable OCR in the HP App

  • In the HP App, look for the Text Recognition (OCR) option when scanning.
  • Make sure it is turned on. This ensures the scanned file contains selectable text.

Verify the Saved File

  • After scanning, open the saved PDF.
  • Try selecting text with your mouse. If you can highlight it, copy-paste into Word will work.
  • If you cannot highlight text, the scan is still an image. Re-scan with OCR enabled.

Alternative Workflow

  • If you already have image-only scans, open them in the HP App.
  • Use the Save as Searchable PDF option to convert them.
  • Then open the new file in Word and copy-paste the text.

Insert Instead of Copy-Paste

  • If your scan is a photo or image-only file, you can insert it directly into Word:
    • Open Word → Go to InsertPictures → Select your scanned file.
  • This won’t give editable text but will place the scanned image inside your document.

By following these steps, you’ll be able to copy text from scans into Word when OCR is used, or insert the scanned image if text recognition isn’t needed.
