Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

I can't use the scanner anymore. I have downloaded the software again but it doesn't work. If I open the scanner then I am asked to register or log in but I can't do this. I get thrown out of the system immediately

Could be a number of things - sometimes easy to fix, sometimes painful and irritating.

Assuming for the sake of the answer that you simply want to scan something before your hair turns gray,

One usual solution is to (re)install (and use) the Full Feature Software for your Windows machine.

The full driver includes HP Scan.

HP Scan does not require a sign-in

OR

If you are using a mobile device, the solution must be found using what you have:

Unknown mobile device

Unknown application (perhaps HP Smart)

Unknown network / location

One Idea...

If you have not done so, try / consider:

  • Uninstall the app from the device
  • Switch off the device (it won't be off for long)
  • Restart the network router that controls the device and the printer.
  • Reset the printer power :: While on and plugged in, remove the power cord (unplug) the printer > Wait two minutes > Plug in to a verified (working) wall outlet > If the printer does not start up on it's own, click the power button to start and wait for the printer to boot completely.
  • Restart the network router that controls the device and the printer.
  • After the printer is booted, switch on the device (phone?) > Install a fresh copy of the app
  • Check for differences

What else?

Make sure the every device that uses the application is running the latest version of that application for the particular platform (Operating System on the device).
