I have a MacBook which I would like to scan to. However I cannot set up the scan function on my printer at all.

I understand how frustrating it is when you can’t get the scan function working on your MacBook. This is a common issue with HP printers on macOS, but we can fix it step by step.

Why This Happens

  • HP scanning requires the HP app or full-feature drivers.
  • macOS sometimes blocks older HP scan drivers.
  • The printer may not have Scan to Computer enabled.


Recommended Steps for macOS

1. Install HP App


2. Enable Scan to Computer

  • In the HP app: 
    • Click Printer Settings.
    • Enable Scan to Computer.
  • If the option doesn’t appear, update printer firmware.


3. Use the HP app to scan

  • In the HP app: 
    • Click Scan.
    • Choose Document or Photo.
    • Adjust settings (resolution, color, file type).
    • Click Scan, then Save or Share.


4. Update Drivers


5. Test with macOS Image Capture

  • Open Image Capture (built-in app).
  • Select your HP printer from the list.
  • Try scanning from there.
