HP OfficeJet Pro 8028e All-in-One Printer

I have a HP OfficeJet Pro 8030e laser printer which can receive faxes, but not send them.  It gets a busy tone and cancels every time.

Hi @KeithBSA51,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8030e can receive faxes but not send them, and you’re encountering a busy tone followed by the cancellation of the fax, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Phone Line Connection

Verify Phone Line Connection:

  • Ensure that the phone line is securely connected to the “LINE” port on the back of the printer.
  • Check that the phone line is connected to a working phone jack and not a splitter. If using a splitter, try connecting directly to the phone jack.

Test the Phone Line:

  • Plug a phone directly into the phone jack to ensure there is a dial tone and that the line is working correctly.

2. Check Fax Settings

  • On the printer’s control panel, go to the fax settings and ensure they are configured correctly.
  • Make sure that the correct fax number and dialing prefix (if any) are entered.
  • If you have a dedicated fax line, ensure that the fax settings are set to use that line.
  • Check that the correct country/region is selected in the fax settings.

3. Check Fax Configuration

  • Confirm that the fax setup is complete and configured correctly. You might need to set up fax parameters such as fax header and dial settings.
  • Check for any available firmware updates for your printer on the HP Support Website. Install any updates if available, as they can sometimes fix bugs related to faxing.

4. Run Fax Test

  1. Run a Fax Test:
    • Use the printer’s built-in diagnostics to perform a fax test. This may be available in the fax settings or tools menu on the printer’s control panel.Follow any instructions provided by the test results.

5. Check for Interference

  1. Remove Other Devices:
    • If you have other devices connected to the same phone line (such as an answering machine or phone), disconnect them temporarily to see if the issue resolves.
    • Make sure that any other devices on the line are not causing interference.

6. Check for Errors

  1. Review Error Messages:
    • If the printer displays any error messages or codes when attempting to send a fax, refer to the printer’s user manual or HP’s support site for information on how to resolve those specific errors.

7. Test Different Fax Numbers

  1. Try Sending to Another Fax Number:
    • Attempt to send a fax to a different number to rule out issues with the recipient’s fax line

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
