Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

Message: I recently moved my HP scanner to a new computer and am forced to use the HP Smart app. Since the switch, my scans—specifically of receipts and documents—are completely washed out and unreadable.

The Problem: The software is aggressively over-exposing the image. The text is faint or entirely missing, and the background is a "blown-out" white. It appears the app’s auto-exposure is failing to calibrate correctly for thermal paper.

Steps I have already taken (which did NOT work):

  • Changed Presets: I switched from "Document" to "Photo" mode, but the software still applies a high-contrast filter that erases text.

  • Adjusted Output: I tried both Grayscale and Color; both result in the same over-exposed image.

  • Resolution: I have tested at 300 dpi and 600 dpi with no improvement.

  • Manual Adjustments: Even when using the "Adjust" sliders after the scan, the raw data captured by the sensor is so bright that increasing contrast doesn't recover the missing text.

Request: Is there a way to disable "Auto-Exposure" within the HP Smart app? If not, please provide the link to the "Full Feature Software and Drivers" for my model so I can use the classic HP Scan utility, which allows for manual exposure control. The current "Smart" app is making my hardware unusable for business records.

Hi @Seeker502,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing issues with scan quality after switching to a new PC and using the HP Smart app. Here’s how you can troubleshoot and improve the scan quality:

Check Scanner Setup: Ensure that the document or photo is placed correctly on the scanner glass or in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) using the guides provided.

Adjust Scan Settings:

  • Open HP Smart: On your Mac or PC, open the HP Smart app.

  • Select Scanner Settings: Click the Printer Scan tile and then access the settings.

  • Disable Auto Preview: You can turn off the auto preview by clicking the wand icon and disabling the auto preview switch if it's causing issues.

  • Modify Exposure Manually: Adjust the exposure settings manually if possible. Look for options to modify brightness, contrast, and other factors in the scan settings.

  • Resolution Settings: Increase the scan resolution setting if the option is available. Higher resolution scans may take longer but often result in clearer images.

Scan in Color Mode: If you're currently scanning in black and white or grayscale, try scanning the document in color mode to see if there's any improvement.

Update or Reinstall the App:

  • Ensure you have the latest version of the HP Smart app. If not, update it.

  • Sometimes, reinstalling the app can reset any glitches or settings that might be causing issues.

Calibration and Maintenance:

  • Run any available calibration or maintenance tools if they are included in your scanner's utility settings. Regular maintenance, like cleaning the scanner glass, can also help.

Try Alternative Software: If the issue persists with HP Smart, consider using different scanning software that might offer better control over exposure settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
