Hi @nice2hav,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering an issue with your HP OfficeJet 5740 e-All-in-One Printer when scanning documents to PDF on a Windows 11 system. The documents appearing in jumbled characters or computer language can be due to several potential issues. Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try to resolve this:

Update Printer Drivers and Software:

  • Make sure your printer's drivers are up-to-date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website. Enter your printer model and choose the drivers designed for Windows 11.  https://support.hp.com/us-en

Check Scanner Settings:

  • Before scanning, verify the settings in the HP scanning software. Make sure the file type is correctly set to PDF and the resolution settings are appropriate. Sometimes, setting the resolution too high can cause issues with file integrity upon opening.

Reinstall the Scanning Software:

  • Uninstall and then reinstall the HP scanning software. This can resolve any corrupted files or settings that might be causing the issue.

Check the PDF Software:

  • The issue might be with the PDF viewer you are using. Try opening the PDF files with a different viewer, such as Adobe Acrobat Reader or another trusted PDF reader, to see if the problem persists.

Scan as Image:

  • Try scanning the document as an image file (like JPG or PNG) to see if the issue is specific to PDF output. If the image files are fine, the problem might be related specifically to how PDF files are being processed or generated.

Scan to Another Computer:

  • If possible, try scanning to a different computer to see if the issue is related to your specific installation of Windows 11 or your computer's configuration.

HP Print and Scan Doctor:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
