Welcome to the HP English Community --

HP Smart -- Windows / Mobile -- has required sign-in using your HP Account credentials for a while (since 2021?).

Should you be using HP Smart, I cannot explain why you have not seen the requirement before now.

In most cases -- You need not use HP Smart -- use of the HP Smart application is Optional.

The Exceptions

If you have enabled the HP+ service contract,

  • The printer must be kept connected to the Internet to support the service and security added to the printer.
  • Certain premium services are only supported via the HP Smart application.

Some sections of the Embedded Web Server (EWS) might require that you enter the printer PIN to gain access to the feature(s).  In those printers that require it, the printer PIN is an embedded security feature and cannot be bypassed.

What else?

The full driver printer software, other Microsoft print / scan apps do not (to my knowledge) require sign-in to use the products.

Perhaps tell us more about which software / apps you are using and where you are seeing a request that you sign-in.

"Drop" ?

Personal Choice -- we do not judge what people decide to do.

The printer is an older model -- replacing it makes more sense than were the printer just a year old.

Thanks for responding. It's actually a pro 9010 that's only a couple of years old to me(bought new).I don't use my mobile for this printer, but do open the smart app from my windows 10 toolbar. This is literally the first week I have had to sign in each time I try to scan an item(glass or feeder no  difference).Just curious what could have changed. And I understand you saying it's been there and curious to why I haven't seen it... so am I!! lol . I don't have this with print aspect, just scan .  It is always connected, never used a pin-or even set one up that I can remember and this is the only app I've been using. Like I said, curious. Appreciate your time!

Also this sign in procedure is for each scan not just one time opening the smart app, until I log out.

You are welcome.

FYI only

HP Smart is a clever application -- it's able to complete a wide variety of tasks within its specialties:  Print and Scan operations.

The "requirement" to sign in to the HP Smart application as opposed to the original "suggestion" of years past, is likely tied to the several features in the application that simply do not work without the user (you) granting permission ahead of time.   One method the the app uses for at least some of the implied access is to rely on your having provided your HP Account credentials.

HP follows strict guidelines about the type of data it collects -

You can view the documents and information in the HP Smart application.

What else?

HP Smart includes access to certain post Scan options -

For example,

The features found in HP Smart Shortcuts require the user (you) to have signed in not only to HP Smart but - in addition and where applicable -- to the operator's email and / or Cloud Storage accounts.

Example - HP Smart - Shortcuts

Scanned content > Select a (previously) created Shortcut to store / save the scanned content in Cloud Storage
