@MONTYSHERIDAN, Welcome to the HP Support Community – it’s great to have you here!

I appreciate you taking the time to share your question. I'm more than happy to assist with this and provide a solution that works for you.

Based on your description and the uploaded scan image showing a large vertical streak when scanning from both the flatbed and ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740, here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve the issue:

Clean the Scanner Glass and ADF Strip

Streaks are most commonly caused by dust, smudges, or debris on the scanner glass or the narrow ADF strip.

What to Clean:

  • Main scanner glass
  • ADF scanner strip (small glass strip next to the main glass)
  • Underside of the ADF lid

Cleaning Instructions:

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  2. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with glass cleaner (do not spray directly on the glass).
  3. Wipe the entire scanner glass and the ADF strip thoroughly.
  4. Dry with a clean, dry cloth to avoid streaks.

Test Scan Again

After cleaning:

  • Try scanning a document using both the flatbed and ADF.
  • Check if the streak persists.

Isolate the Issue

If the streak still appears:

  • Try scanning a blank sheet.
  • Try scanning from HP Smart app or Windows Fax and Scan to rule out software issues.

Firmware and Driver Update

Ensure your printer is running the latest firmware and drivers:

Hardware Check

If cleaning and updates don’t help, the issue may be hardware-related:

  • Internal scanner sensor or ADF light bar may be faulty.
  • Since you mentioned the previous printer had the same issue, ensure the environment is clean and documents are free of staples or tape that could scratch the glass.

I hope your issue is now resolved. If not, feel free to reply and we’ll continue helping until everything’s sorted!
