Hi @Buttons1201,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To connect your landline with an answering machine to your HP OfficeJet 3830 series printer and HP all-in-one desktop, follow these steps:

Connecting the Landline to the HP OfficeJet 3830 Series Printer

Locate the Phone Line Port:

  • On the back of your HP OfficeJet 3830, locate the port labeled “LINE” (for incoming phone line) and “TEL” or “PHONE” (for a telephone or answering machine).

Connect the Phone Line:

  • Plug one end of the phone cord into the phone line port on the printer labeled "LINE."
  • Plug the other end of the phone cord into a phone jack on your wall.

Connect the Answering Machine:

  • Take another phone cord and plug one end into the "TEL" or "PHONE" port on the printer.
  • Plug the other end into the input port on your answering machine.

Verify the Connection:

  • Make sure all connections are secure.
  • Turn on your printer and check if it detects the phone line properly by printing a fax test report or checking the printer’s settings.

Connecting the Landline to Your HP All-in-One Desktop

Connecting a landline directly to a desktop computer typically isn't required unless you're using a modem for dial-up internet or fax. However, if you need to connect a landline for fax purposes or other reasons, follow these steps:

Check for a Modem:

  • Ensure that your HP all-in-one desktop has a built-in modem or an external modem connected. If your computer doesn’t have a modem, you might need an external fax modem.

Connect the Phone Line to the Modem:

  • Plug one end of the phone cord into the phone line port on the modem.
  • Plug the other end into the phone jack on your wall.

Install Necessary Software:

  • If you are using the modem for faxing or dial-up, make sure that the appropriate drivers and software are installed on your computer. Most operating systems come with built-in fax software, but you may need additional software depending on your needs.

Configure Fax Settings:

  • If you need to send or receive faxes, configure the fax settings on your computer. You can usually find fax settings in the control panel or within the fax software.

Additional Tips

  • Compatibility Check: Ensure that the phone line configuration matches the requirements of your printer and any other devices. Some answering machines might have specific connection requirements.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
