MFP3101fdw / Scanned item is either All Black or All WMFP3101fdw / Scanned item is either All Black or All White with no imagehite with no image.  Note that it seems to print fine.

That’s frustrating, especially since printing works fine but scanning doesn’t. Here are some troubleshooting steps that might help:

 

Possible Causes & Fixes

 

Check Scanner Glass & ADF

  • Ensure the scanner glass and Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) are clean.
  • Dust or smudges can cause scanning issues.

 

Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it for 60 seconds, then restart.
  • Sometimes, a reset can resolve scanning glitches.

 

Update or Reinstall Drivers

  • Go to Device Manager (Win + X → Device Manager).
  • Expand Imaging Devices and uninstall the scanner driver.
  • Restart your PC—Windows should reinstall the driver automatically.
  • You can also download the latest drivers from HP’s support page.

 

Check HP Smart or Scan Software

  • If you’re using HP Scan and Capture, note that HP retired this app in 2024.
  • Try scanning with HP Smart instead.

 

Perform a Scanner Test

  • Open HP Print and Scan Doctor (available on HP’s website).
  • Run a diagnostic test to check for hardware issues.

 

Try a Different Scan Format

  • If scanning to PDF, try scanning to JPEG or PNG instead.
  • Some users reported format-related issues.

Check for Hardware Issues

  • If none of these work, the scanner’s CCD sensor or lamp might be faulty.
