Operating System: macOS 10.15 Catalina

This is a NEW printer/fax/scanner - - - I've only used HP in the past - - and this is the FIRST that (apparently??) will not allow me to scan using the drop-down on my MacBook????  What's the deal?  Am I wrong on this?  It appears I have to go to the HP App to scan.  The App takes forever to respond. . . and the scan offers me few options to refine the document. What's up with this???  Am I doing something wrong or is this the new "normal" with HP?
