Hi @christinelwade

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining the issue—I'm really sorry your HP 4500 is stuck on the cartridge screen and the HP app is freezing. This kind of behavior typically points to a firmware lock, driver miscommunication, or a corrupted app cache

Let’s walk through a focused recovery process to get your scan and print options working again.

Step-by-Step Fix: HP 4500 Frozen on Cartridge Screen + HP App Freezing

1. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord from both the printer and wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and turn it on.

This clears temporary firmware locks and resets the cartridge detection logic.

2. Check Cartridge Seating

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove both cartridges.
  • Reinsert them firmly until they click into place.
  • Close the door and wait for the printer to initialize.

Even genuine HP cartridges can trigger a stall if not fully seated or if contacts are dusty.

3. Reset the HP App

  • If using HP Smart, do the following:
    • Close the app completely.
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Installed Apps > HP Smart.
    • Click Advanced Options > Reset.
    • Restart your computer and reopen the app.

This clears cached data that may be blocking access to scan and print functions.

4. Reinstall Printer Driver

  • Visit the official support page:
HP DeskJet 4500 Series Drivers & Software
  • Download and install the Full Feature Software and Driver package.
  • During installation, choose the correct connection type (USB or Wireless).

This ensures the printer is fully recognized and restores scan functionality.

5. Run HP Diagnose & Fix Tool

Let me know if the printer still stalls on startup or if the HP app remains unresponsive after the reset—I’ll guide you further. You’re doing everything right by catching this early and seeking a proper fix.
