@TWB31, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8138e won’t scan from your Windows 11 laptop, the issue is usually related to driver communication or HP app configuration. Try these steps carefully in order — they cover both hardware and software causes:

Power Cycle Everything

Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable for 60 seconds.

Restart your laptop and Wi-Fi router.

Reconnect the printer to power and let it connect to Wi-Fi again (check the wireless icon on the control panel).

Verify the Connection

On the printer, go to Settings → Network Setup → Wireless Summary and note the IP address.

On your laptop, open a web browser and type that IP address into the address bar.

If the Embedded Web Server (EWS) opens, the printer and PC are on the same network.

If not, reconnect your printer to Wi-Fi using the Wireless Setup Wizard from the printer’s touchscreen.

Check the HP App

Open HP App on your PC.

Remove the printer if already added.

Click Add Printer → select your 8138e → wait until it completes setup.

Try scanning from the HP App→ Scan option.

If the app shows “Cannot communicate with scanner,” continue below.

Check Windows Scan Driver

Press Windows + R, type control printers, and press Enter.

Right-click your HP OfficeJet Pro 8138eScan Properties.

If you get an error or see no WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) driver listed, reinstall the full HP driver package:

Uninstall the printer from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.

Restart your laptop.

Reinstall using HP App again.

Try a Direct USB Scan Test

Temporarily connect the printer via USB cable to the laptop.

Wait for Windows to install drivers.

Open HP App → Scan and try scanning again.

If scanning works over USB, it’s a network communication issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
