HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

My all-inclusive HP printer is working as always and connected with my MacBook Air laptop. My scanner suddenly stopped working today and I cannot get it reconnected. Has always worked in the past. Thank you for any assistance.

Hi @Christine_F,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer is working, but the scanner has stopped working with your MacBook Air, there could be a few reasons for this issue. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help you resolve the problem.

Check Physical Connections:

  • Ensure that the USB or network cable connecting your printer to your MacBook Air is securely connected.
  • If you are using a wireless connection, make sure your printer and MacBook Air are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.

Restart Your Devices:

  • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues. Restart both your printer and MacBook Air.

Update Drivers and Software:

  • Make sure you have the latest printer drivers and software installed on your MacBook Air. You can download the latest drivers and software from the HP website.

Check Scanner Settings:

  • On your MacBook Air, go to "System Preferences" > "Printers & Scanners."
  • Select your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 from the list of printers on the left.
  • Make sure the scanner is listed and enabled. If not, you may need to add it by clicking the "+" button.

Reset Printing System (Mac):

  • If the issue persists, you can try resetting the printing system on your MacBook Air:
    • Go to "System Preferences" > "Printers & Scanners."
    • Right-click (or Control-click) in the left sidebar where your printers are listed.
    • Choose "Reset printing system."
    • This will remove all printers and scanners from your system. You will need to re-add your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 afterward.

HP Scan Software:

  • Install or reinstall HP scanning software if you haven't already. This software often includes scanning utilities that may be required for proper scanner functionality.

Check for macOS Updates:

  • Ensure your MacBook Air is running the latest macOS version by going to "Apple Menu" > "About This Mac" > "Software Update." Sometimes, updates can resolve compatibility issues.

Firewall and Security Software:

  • If you have a firewall or security software installed on your MacBook Air, it might be blocking communication with the scanner. Temporarily disable or configure the software to allow the printer/scanner.

By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 scanner not working with your MacBook Air.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
