Is it possible to just use it for a scanner since that was the reason I bought this particular model? Someone suggested uninstalling the software and just instal the smart scan software. How do I do that?

Great question! The HP OfficeJet 7612 (and similar models) is designed as an All-in-One, meaning the scanning function is independent of the printhead. So yes, you can absolutely use it as a scanner even if the printhead is missing or not replaceable.

Here’s how to make it work:

Steps to Use It as a Scanner Only

1. Ignore Printhead Error for Scanning

  • If the printer shows an error on the screen, you can still scan using the computer or mobile app.
  • The printer’s display might not allow you to start scans directly, but the software can override that.
     

2. Install HP App

3. Use HP Scan Software (Optional)

4. Uninstall Full Printer Software (Optional)

  • If the error blocks scanning in the HP app: 
    • Remove the full printer software from your PC.
    • Reinstall only the HP app or HP Scan.
       

5. Start Scanning

  • Use HP app → Scan or HP Scan Utility.
  • You can scan to PDF, JPEG, or email without needing the printhead.
