HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer

My faxes are not being answered despite using multiple numbers and confirming they are correct and sending at different times of the day. The fax numbers in question are for a large corporation and I believe are in service. Does anyone have a possible explanation that may help me? I have a HP Envy 7640  all in one

@djgking, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're encountering an issue where your faxes aren't getting through, even though you've confirmed the numbers and timing. Here are a few potential explanations and troubleshooting steps you can try:

Fax Line Issues

  • Fax Line Compatibility: Ensure that the line you're using for faxing is dedicated for fax services and isn't shared with an answering machine or another device, as this can cause conflicts.
  • Line Noise: Sometimes, poor quality or noisy phone lines can interfere with fax transmission. Try using a different phone line if possible to rule this out.

Fax Settings

  • Check the Fax Settings: Ensure your HP ENVY 7640 is set up correctly for faxing. This includes checking the correct settings for "Fax Speed" and "Error Correction Mode" (ECM), which helps in case of poor line quality. You can adjust these in the printer's fax settings menu.
  • ECM (Error Correction Mode): If this setting is enabled, try disabling it and see if the faxes go through. Some fax machines have trouble with ECM, especially if there is any line noise.

Receiving Fax Machine Settings

  • Reception Mode: The fax machine at the receiving end might be set to a different reception mode (like manual or a mode that requires someone to pick up). Check if the number you're sending to is in "auto-answer" mode for faxes.
  • Busy Signal or Line Issues: If the recipient’s fax machine is busy, out of paper, or malfunctioning, it may not be receiving your fax. Ensure they confirm their machine is functioning properly.

Check Fax Transmission Logs

Some printers, including the HP ENVY 7640, keep logs of fax transmissions. Check the fax log on your printer’s control panel to see if there are any error codes or messages that may give more insight into why the fax isn't going through.

Firmware Updates

  • Update Firmware: Make sure your HP ENVY 7640 has the latest firmware updates. Sometimes, printer issues related to faxing are resolved in software updates from HP.

Try a Manual Fax Test

  • Test with Another Number: Try sending a fax to a different number to see if it works. This will help determine if the issue is on your side or with the recipient's machine.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
