Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

Scanner no longer works.  On-line assistant is useless.  So is the HP help -- for MAC users just puts you in a loop to a U-Tube video which says to click on the link for MAC help -- which just returns you to the video which does nothing substantive.  Totally stupid.

Anyway, the scanner returns an error message:  (com.apple.imagecapture error 4294967249).

WHAT does that mean?  And how do I fix it?

Or is this just a big company scam to make me go to a licensed repair shop when the printer is basically working?

Hi @1932MGJ2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error message you're seeing, (com.apple.imagecapture error 4294967249), typically indicates a communication issue between your Mac and the scanner. This is not uncommon, and it doesn't necessarily imply a need to go to a licensed repair shop right away. Here are a few steps you can try to potentially resolve the issue yourself:

Restart your devices: Start with the simplest solution by restarting both your printer and your Mac. This can often reset the communication and resolve any temporary glitches.

Check connections: Ensure that your connections (whether USB or network) are secure. If you're using a USB cable, try a different cable or port. If connected over the network, ensure that both devices are on the same network and receiving a strong signal.

Update software:

  • Update your Mac: Go to the Apple menu > System Preferences > Software Update and install any available updates.
  • Update printer drivers: Visit HP’s official website and navigate to their Support or Downloads section. Download and install the latest drivers for your printer model. For macOS, this often involves just adding the printer again to macOS after removing it, which prompts macOS to download the latest software.

Reset the printing system:

  • Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Ctrl-click) in the list of printers on the left-hand side and select ‘Reset printing system…’
  • Add your printer again and try to scan.

Check for macOS compatibility: Ensure that your printer/scanner is compatible with your current version of macOS. Older devices might not have updated drivers for newer macOS versions.

Use HP Smart App or another scanning application: Sometimes, the default Image Capture app might fail, but other applications like the HP Smart app (available from the Mac App Store) or VueScan can work.

Permissions issue: Sometimes, macOS updates may reset security and privacy settings. Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy tab. Check the settings under Files and Folders and Full Disk Access to ensure that your scanning software is permitted to access the necessary files.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
