1. Connect to a Landline

• Use a two-wire telephone cord (not four-wire).
• Plug one end into the wall jack and the other into the 1-LINE port on the back of the printer.
• If you have an answering machine, connect it to the 2-EXT port on the printer.

2. Set Fax Preferences

On the printer control panel or via HP software:

• Fax Header: Enter your name, business name, and 10-digit fax number.
• Answer Mode: Turn on Auto Answer if you want the printer to pick up faxes automatically.
• Rings to Answer: Set this to 2 more than your answering machine’s ring count if sharing the line.
• Ring Type: Use All Rings for a dedicated fax line or Distinctive Ring if your line has a special ring pattern.
• Dial Type: Choose Tone (standard) or Pulse (for rotary phones).

3. Send a Test Fax

• Load the document face down on the scanner glass or face-up in the ADF.
• Dial the recipient’s fax number.
• Press Fax > Send and follow the prompts.

4. Receive Faxes

• Ensure Auto Answer is enabled.
• The printer will pick up incoming faxes after the set number of rings.
