Hi @PhilB56,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thanks for your patience. If your HP OfficeJet 4658 All-in-One Printer document feeder appears to go through the motions but doesn’t scan the documents, here are some steps to troubleshoot and fix the issue:

1. Check for Physical Obstructions

  • Open the ADF cover and inspect for:
    • Dust or debris
    • Torn paper bits
    • Misaligned rollers
  • Clean the rollers gently with a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water.

2. Verify Document Placement

  • Ensure the documents are:
    • Properly aligned
    • Not stapled, folded, or curled
    • Loaded face-up (check your printer’s markings)

3. Run ADF Cleaning Utility

  • If available in your printer’s menu or HP Smart app:
    • Go to Settings → Tools → Clean ADF
    • This runs a maintenance cycle to clear feed issues

4. Try a Copy Instead of a Scan

  • Place the document in the feeder and press Copy instead of Scan.
  • If it copies successfully, the issue may be with the scanning software.

5. Update or Reinstall HP Software

6. Reset the Printer

  • Unplug the printer while it’s powered on.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
