@Nigel2572, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It's definitely frustrating when things slow down, especially after upgrading to a new printer. Since your HP Smart app takes 20–25 seconds to respond with the HP 8130e series but was faster with your old HP 8710, even on the same wireless setup, here are some ways to speed it up:

Set a Static IP for the Printer

Dynamic IP changes can cause slow discovery. Try this:

  • Go to your router's settings (usually at 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1 in your browser).
  • Find connected devices, click on your printer (likely named "HP DeskJet…" or "HP8130e"), and assign it a static IP.
  • Then in HP Smart > Printer Settings > Advanced Settings, set this same static IP as the printer address.

Turn Off IPv6 (if enabled)

IPv6 sometimes slows down printer communication.

  • Type the printer's IP address in a browser.
  • Go to Network Settings > Advanced > IP Settings.
  • Disable IPv6, and save.

Check HP Smart App Startup

Make sure the app isn't waiting to discover the printer from scratch every time:

  • Open HP Smart.
  • Click the printer image > Advanced Settings (or Settings icon top right).
  • Make sure your printer is "Set as Default".
  • Enable Auto-Connect or Keep printer connected if available.

Disable Wi-Fi Direct (if not in use)

Wi-Fi Direct can cause some confusion in wireless networks.

  • On the printer control panel, go to Settings > Wi-Fi Direct.
  • Turn it Off if you're not actively using it.

Firmware & App Updates

  • Make sure your printer firmware is updated:
Open HP Smart > Printer Settings > Printer Reports > Printer Update.
  • Update the HP Smart app to the latest version (especially if you're on Windows 11 or macOS).

Remove and Re-Add the Printer in HP Smart

Sometimes re-adding the printer refreshes the connection method:

  • In HP Smart, remove the printer (click the printer > Settings > Remove).
  • Add it again via Wi-Fi (not Wi-Fi Direct).

Optional: Use USB for Scanning

If you're mainly scanning and want it instantly responsive, try connecting the printer over USB. You can still print wirelessly, but scanning over USB is usually faster and more stable.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
