Product: HP Envy Photo 7858
Operating System: macOS 10.15 Catalina

To the left of the regular scan bed on my 7858, there is a tall, very narrow window. What's it for?  Can it be used to somehow scan negatives or slides? It is about the size of a negative film strip.  Any explanation would be appreciated. 

 

Also, anyone have any luck at all, including hacks, using their scanner for slides?

A small slit of glass to the left of the full size glass is where documents fed through the ADF are scanned. This is the area you clean if you are getting black vertical lines when scanning or copying.
