HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M479fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My office uses the color laser jet pro mfp m479fdw, which was purchased in July 2021. The print quality is still just fine, but the quality of copies has just drastically declined. It typically will copy blues and greens with about the same intensity, but those 2 colors are hard to distinguish - they look identical. Additionally, any reds or oranges are now very faint, appearing as a barely visible yellow, when the original print is a vivid orange. I have estimated that we've made approximately 5500 copies on this machine.

Is this just to be expected, or is there anything we can do to improve the copy quality again?

Are you using HP supplies?  Does it happen in both the ADF and flat scan?  Does changing the copy settings (image adjust, optimize) impact copy quality?

We are sometimes using HP toner, but not always. But we do not think it's a toner issue, since the print quality is still good. We are using the flat scan, as the ADF results in black lines (I just was reading about fixing that, but it's not a big deal to us since we just use the flat scan instead). I have not dug into the copy settings a whole lot yet. The copy quality was first impacted on Sunday and is dramatically getting worse every day.

When the HP LJ M477 came out, we found that the remanufactured toner would not produce quality copies.  At first, we were like you.  My company wasted money replacing parts.  We started tracking the issue and documenting when problem occurred.  Bad copies usually started right after the OEM starter cartridges were replaced with remanufactured toners.  Why?  Don't know.  Test a full set of OEM toners.  Most people choose not to do this because OEM toner cost more. Ok.  Upgrade firmware first.  Then, either install four HP toners or replace ADF scanner assembly.  Good luck.
