I cannot scan.  The error message when I try to open the scan dialogue is "Scanner communication cannot be established."  I have twice run the HP Print and Scan Doctor without success.  The device uses the USB connection and is printing and copying normally.

This happened a week ago and I ultimately solved the problem by completely reinstalling  the software.  The fault has now re-occurred.

First download only this software package: HP DeskJet / Ink Advantage 2600/2675/2676/2677/2678 Print and Scan Driver and Accessories 

 

Try these steps here first:

  1. shut down printer via on/off switch
  2. shut down the computer
  3. wait about 60 sec.
  4. Switch on the printer, wait until the printer has finished its initialization
  5. switch on computer, log in (with admin rights) and wait about 30 sec.

... and now everything's working again?

@Andr-1611.  Thank you for your response.

I have followed all your steps but the fault continues.  The printer and copier are working perfectly but I cannot communicate with the scanner whether it is connected via a USB cable or over the network.  I have run the HP Print and Scan Doctor again on both USP and network connections but to no effect.

@Andr-1611.   Further to my report last night, I have now uninstalled all the software and reloaded.  The scanner is working perfectly - so far.

I am afraid that the fault has now re-occurred, possibly associated with a Windows 10 update.  I can cure the problem by uninstalling all the software and then reloading.  Can anybody please suggest a more convenient work round?

Is the WLAN active? If yes, then disable the WLAN.

@Andr-1611 Thank you for your reply.  I am not sure whether a WLAN is active.  My desktop computer is connected to the router with an ethernet cable and  the broadband connection to the router is over a fibre optic telephone line. 

Normally my HP DeskJet 2630  uses a USB connection to the computer.  When the system is working, I can scan using either USB or the wireless network.  When the scanning fails, for USB I get an error message, "Scanner communication cannot be established".  If I choose a network connection there is no scan tab.   Printing is normal for both USB and network connections.

There may be a glitch in the system.  After a Microsoft update, I cannot communicate with the scanner and HP Print and Scan Doctor is disabled.  The printer and copier are working normally.

The problem is solved by uninstalling the software and reinstalling

I have wasted all morning trying to get the scanner to work, although printing and copying are working normally.  I have run HP Print and Scan Doctor; restarted the device and the computer in the sequence recommended on 7 Jan 2022  by Andr-1611; and uninstalled and reinstalled the software.  There is no connection to the scanner, whether I use a USB or network connection. The error message reads "Scanner communication cannot be established".

This a recurrent fault without any obvious trigger, although previously reinstallation of the software has cured the problem.

Where do I go from here, please?
