Hi @Gregga252

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 is showing "scanner in use" and the HP Print and Scan Doctor reports an issue with Device Manager, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve the problem:

1. Check for Active Scans

  • Ensure there are no ongoing scans or print jobs that could be causing the "scanner in use" message. If there are, cancel them.

2. Restart Your Devices

  • Power Cycle: Turn off the printer, unplug it for at least 15 seconds, and then plug it back in and power it on.
  • Restart Your Computer: Sometimes, restarting your computer can help resolve communication issues.

3. Update or Reinstall Drivers

  • Update Drivers: Go to the HP Support website, find your printer model, and download the latest drivers for your operating system.
  • Reinstall Drivers: If updating doesn’t help, uninstall the printer drivers through Device Manager and then reinstall them.

4. Check USB/Wireless Connection

  • If you're using a USB connection, try a different USB port or cable. If you're connected wirelessly, ensure that your printer is on the same network as your computer.

5. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor Again

  • Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor again to see if it detects and can fix the issue. Follow its prompts carefully.
  • cick here

6. Check Device Manager

  • Open Device Manager (right-click the Start menu and select Device Manager😞
    • Look for any devices with a yellow triangle or red X under Imaging Devices or Printers.
    • If you see your printer with an error, right-click it and select Update Driver or Uninstall. Then, restart your computer and reconnect the printer.

7. Reset Printer Settings

  • Factory Reset: If nothing works, consider restoring the printer to factory settings:
    • Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Factory Defaults. Note that this will reset all custom settings.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accepted Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.
