My HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28-M-31 scanner isn't working.   The printer/copier works fine.   The scanner starts across the screen, but the scanning light goes out about the halfway point and doesn't complete the scan.    The problem?    Would reloading the printer fix it?   How do I reload/restart

Hi @Walter2619,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you're experiencing an issue with the scanning function of your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M28-M31 printer. There could be several reasons for this problem, ranging from hardware issues to software glitches. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

Check for Hardware Issues:

  • Make sure that there are no obstructions or debris on the scanner glass or the automatic document feeder (ADF) if your printer has one.
  • Ensure that the scanner lid is closed properly and securely.
  • Verify that the power and connection cables are properly connected to the printer.

Restart the Printer:

  • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve minor glitches. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, and then plug it back in. Turn it on and try scanning again.

Update Printer Firmware and Software:

  • Visit the official HP support website and search for your printer model to find the latest firmware and software updates. Updating the printer's firmware can often resolve various issues.

Check Software Settings:

  • Make sure that you have the correct scanning settings selected on your computer. Sometimes, the software settings might be causing the incomplete scan.
  • Try scanning from a different software application (e.g., Windows Fax and Scan, HP Scan software) to see if the issue persists.

Scan in Safe Mode:

  • If you're using a Windows computer, try scanning in Safe Mode to rule out any potential software conflicts.

Check for Driver Issues:

  • Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause scanning problems. Visit the official HP support website and download the latest drivers for your printer model. Install the updated drivers and see if the issue is resolved.

Check for Errors or Alerts:

  • Look for any error messages or alerts displayed on the printer's control panel or your computer screen. These messages might provide more information about the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
