HP OfficeJet Pro 8728 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Error message saying "scanning communication cannot be established". I have tried turning off and on both printer and PC (Windows 10). It works with HP Smart but not with original HP software. I don't want to use HP Smart. It has worked perfectly for years but now refuses to work on either of two other PCs.

Thank you for your help. The problem was identical using two different PCs so not likely to be software on PC. I felt it was either WiFi router or Printer. I tried using diagnostic tools (Print and Scan Doctor) but couldn't get it to run. Have sorted that out and it seems to have fixed problems on the device, so all OK now.

You are welcome.

Sure - makes sense --

Windows Updates resulting in corrupted Software is easy -- it is not always the source of the problem.

If the corrective action does not "stick",

Check / Consider -

Method - Create TCP IP port

TCP/IP can resolve odd connection, scanning, and installation problems.

Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

Find the printer's IPv4 address

Print a Configuration Page

OR

Tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address

Control Panel, from Devices and Printers

Right-Click the printer and Left-Click Printer Properties

Tab Ports

Click Add Port

Select Standard TCP/IP Port

Select New Port and follow the instructions

Type in the correct IP address for the printer

How-to “Create TCP Port” Video Contributed by  greenturtle
Create & Use TCP IP port
"Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port within the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)"
