HP DeskJet 4155e All-in-One Printer

my hp scanner hasn't worked for a few years since i bought the printer/scanner "hp deskjet 4155e" all in one

i have done tech support for several small businesses over years, so i'll keep it simple and to the points.

i'm trying to scan and it's becoming a real issue that it's impossible to scan with the printer i bought about 5 years ago.  initially windows 10 scan worked fine.  then only hp smart scan worked.  now nothing works, but the printer prints every time without fail.  hp smart recognizes the printer when i click 'add setup a printer' on the left toolbar.  the printer/scanner is 'online' 192.168.0.2.  initially after i left clicked that printer it showed on the home screen as offline.  uninstalling the driver in device manger got the printer to show on the home screen as 'online' but windows 10 scan and hp smart both show nothing when i click 'scan'.

i did look through my netgear router settings and nothing seemed like it would help.  i found good instructions on another comment on this forum ( https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printers-Archive-Read-Only/My-all-in-one-can-print-but-not-scan/td-p/8... ) but i was unable to find 'windows services' in windows 10.  not being paid for my time i scrapped trying this, because i'm doing this for me, not for a business.  so i don't need to spend time figuring this out if it might be impossible to fix anyway.

i'm at a loss for what to do to scan with this device.  i guess i could connect it with a cable, but i'll most likely use the device to print only and even though it might not be hp scanner's fault, buy a scanner from a different company, maybe a standalone scanner which scans and saves to a flash drive so i don't have this issue again.  i figured i'd post here since notoriously scanners and printers give tech professionals headaches on the job.  i'm not sure why the scan feature in windows or hp is so broken that it won't scan at all and prints without fail from every app and every wireless device.

i tried both the hp smart troubleshooter and windows troubleshooter multiple times.  i did try restarting my computer after printing a page to see if it's a timeout issue, and that's not it either.

this screenshot might be the crux of the issue, but not having solved it yet, i don't know if this is the underlying problem or not.  scanner problem 072225.jpg

@Lecksite, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

Based on your description and the error message in the image "Contact your network administrator. Windows could not fix the problem." it appears the issue is related to network communication between the scanner and your PC, even though printing works fine.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to resolve the scanning issue on your HP DeskJet 4155e All-in-One Printer:

Ensure Full Feature Software is Installed

Make sure you have the HP Smart app and the HP Full Feature Software and Drivers installed:

Restart Devices

  1. Power off your printer.
  2. Restart your router.
  3. Restart your PC.
  4. Power the printer back on.

This clears any stale network sessions.

Check Windows Services

You mentioned difficulty finding Windows Services. Here's how:

  1. Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Ensure the following services are Running and Set to Automatic:
    • Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)
    • Shell Hardware Detection
    • RPC (Remote Procedure Call)
    • DCOM Server Process Launcher
    • Function Discovery Provider Host
    • Function Discovery Resource Publication

If any are not running, right-click → Start, and set Startup Type to Automatic.

Assign Static IP to Printer

Since your printer is on 192.168.0.2, it may be changing IPs occasionally. Assign a static IP:

  1. Access your router settings.
  2. Reserve the IP 192.168.0.2 for your printer’s MAC address.
  3. On the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) (open http://192.168.0.2 in a browser), go to Network > Advanced Settings and set the IP manually.

Add Scanner Manually

  1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  2. Right-click your printer > Remove device.
  3. Click Add a device > Let Windows search.
  4. If not found, click “The printer I want isn’t listed” > Add using TCP/IP address.
  5. Enter 192.168.0.2 and follow prompts.

Try USB Connection (Optional)

If wireless scanning continues to fail, try connecting via USB. This can help isolate whether the issue is network-related.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
