Hi @Gritty54

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for explaining everything so clearly—it’s frustrating when the scanner vanishes after an update, especially when you’ve already worked hard to get the printer back online. Let’s walk through a few steps to help restore full scanning functionality. 🛠

If you’re experiencing scanner issues after a Windows update and have removed scanner-related software, here’s a step-by-step guide to help you reinstall and get your scanner working again:

Uninstall Remaining HP Software:

  • Ensure all previous versions of HP software related to your printer/scanner are uninstalled. Go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features, find any HP-related apps, and uninstall them.

Download the Latest Driver:

  • Visit the HP Support website to download the latest drivers and full software package for your HP Envy Photo 7858.

Install HP Smart:

  • After downloading, run the installation package. Install the HP Smart app, which will help manage your printer and scanner and guide you through the setup process.

Reinstall Using HP Smart:

  • Open the HP Smart app and use it to detect your printer. Follow any onscreen prompts to connect the printer/scanner and finish setup.

Check Software and Connection:

  • Ensure your computer is connected to the same network as your printer if connecting wirelessly. Ethernet or USB connections should be secure and recognized by the PC.

Perform a Test:

  • Use the HP Smart app to perform a scan as a test. This can help verify that the scanner is functioning correctly.

Update Windows and HP Software:

  • Check for Windows updates and HP firmware updates through the app to ensure all components are updated to the latest version.

Troubleshoot Using HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool

  • In the HP Smart app, click Printer Settings > Diagnose & Fix.
  • Let it run a scan—it will automatically fix common connection issues.
You can also access this tool on HP’s support page if needed.

You’ve already done a lot of the heavy lifting—let’s get the scanner back in action so you can stop wrestling with settings and start scanning smoothly again. Let me know how it goes or if you’d like help with any of the steps! 💪
