HP Envy 5055
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

We got new printers installed running Win10Pro. Previously I used a unit with Win7 Pro which I later did an in place upgrade to Win10. Not by choice. On the former unit al I had to do is select Scan, the PC, and file type and we were off to the races.  With the new units I get an error message the Envy cannot connect UNLESS I try to scan a second time. Then the HP AIO WIA app pops up. Why? How to fix?

Edits - Add HP Scan and Capture link and example (near end of message)

Migration to a new Operating System / version usually breaks installed software / applications, including printer software.

If you have not already done so,

Uninstall the all the printer software from Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

Download-save-install the Full Feature Software

HP ENVY 5000 All-in-One Print and Scan Driver and Accessories

After the software is fully installed, Restart the computer and log in

Check to make sure your printer is set as the Default printing device.

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

OR

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on printer > Set printer as Default

Adobe Reader DC – Needed Whether You Use It or Not

If you have not done so,

Reinstall / Update your PDF Reader (Adobe Reader DC /Optional  Foxit Reader)

HINT:  Watch out for and UNCHECK unwanted extra software

NOTE:  Adobe Reader DC software should be installed even if you do not normally open / view / print PDF files directly from the Adobe Reader DC software.

What else?

Change the printer connection type to TCP/IP

Method - Create TCP IP port

** Install – Optional - Port Issues - Create a TCP/IP port **

TCP/IP can resolve odd connection, scanning, and installation problems.

Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by  greenturtle:

  1. 1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
    2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, Right-Click the printer and Left-Click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
    3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
    4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:
Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port within the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

What else?

Depending on the printer and the printer software,

things might have changed a bit since you were using Windows 7.

For example, Ctrl Print is going to use the defaulted Preferences (those left from the last time these were set).

Keep track of your Paper settings and your Preferences

Check / Adjust / Retain the Paper at the Printer Display Panel

Open Printer Tray,

If you have not yet done so, add desired paper type

Wait a couple of seconds…

Close Tray

IF applicable for your printer:

Look for a message on the Printer Control / Display Panel,

Click Modify (wording varies), set the paper size and type, Click OK

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down menu, Select Custom (likely the last selection in the list)

And / Or

Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If the printer is on the network,

If the EWS feature is supported on your printer,

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / configure your printer.

NOTE:  Laser printer options in EWS are very different from those offered in InkJet Printers.

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

If applicable, check the Advanced section (at the bottom of the Tray and Paper Management menu)

Click Apply to save changes

NOTE:  If the size of the Paper Size is not in the Drop-down menu, Select Custom (likely the last selection in the list)

NOTE:  EWS is also available in HP Smart

Set the Preferences - Windows

  1. Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

  1. Select and adjust settings in each category for the Media (kind of paper), source (tray), and paper size.

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

Left-Click on (your) Printer > Manage > Printing Preferences

Next

Tab Printing Shortcuts > Click / Highlight your preferred shortcut > Click Apply > Click OK to exit

NOTE - Make changes to a Shortcut

  • Select a shortcut and adjust the settings for paper, source (tray), other settings / Tabs
  • Scan Menu for HP Scan >>  If there is a More > section, check / adjust settings in the sub-sections > Click OK to save sub-menu changes
  • If supported, save the edited shortcut or use “Save As” or “Create Custom Shortcut” to save as a new / different file name
  • Click OK to save the setup

=======================================================================

If the whole Ctrl Print operation just no longer works as you need it,

Open the object (document / image) in the appropriate application / software for the kind of file,

Print from the application.

For example

Open PDF files in Adobe Reader DC

Click the Print icon

Set up the job and print.

Example

Manage Print Output with Print Preview_PDF_1DManage Print Output with Print Preview_PDF_1D

What else?

Scan Options

  • HP Scan (part of the Full Feature Software)
  • HP Smart (Windows or Mobile - Windows is "smarter")
  • HP Scan and Capture

Observations - Personal Opinion

Worse than broken printer software, "in place" upgrades MIGHT leave your computer "mostly in one version of Windows" but with remnants of the "old" Windows hiding in odd places.  You should ignore this observation as long as you don't have odd, nefarious, continuing issues with your computer and the various software programs installed.  There is nothing "different" about the printing software in this scenario - printing software is not more susceptible to migration issues, it is just included in the list of potential concerns.  If you ever get to the point where things are "not right" in several places and you cannot fix the problems, consider a clean installation of Windows 10.
