Note: From May 1, 2024, the HP Scan and Capture app will no longer be available (retired) in the Microsoft Store and HP will not release any further app updates. Alternatively, you can download HP Smart from the Microsoft Store. For more information on how to set up your printer using the HP Smart app, go to HP printer setup (HP Smart app).

macOS 12.0 Monterey

Hello Community,

I think I've tried everything to make my HP OfficeJet Pro 6970 scan again but failed. Maybe some clever minds can help me with this issue.

I used to scan with HP Easy Scan and the MacOS native Preview and everything worked fine for years. At some point I could not scan that way anymore since both HP easy scan and Preview would either show the message "Scanner not available", "Waiting for scanner" or HP easy scan would show me a throbber indefinitely.

I switched to HP Smart a few months ago and it worked although I do not like the app.

Long story short: It does not work anymore. Everytime I click on scan within HP smart I get greeted by the message "Scanning is Currently Unavailable. Select Return Home to check that the printer is connected and active. Once connected, return here to scan."

My Setup and what I've tried so far:

HP OfficeJet Pro 6970

MacBook Pro with macOS 12.3.1 (most recent)

HP Smart 13.6.0 (571)

Printer is connected via Wifi

Printing works fine

Copying works fine

  1. Delete the printer multiple times from System preferences > Printers & Scanners and adding it back.
  2. Reset the printer to factory settings
  3. Resetting my Router
  4. MacBook on/off
  5. Tried to download the latest firmware via the “HP Firmware Updater” only receiving the message “Cannot update the device. This Firmware Updater does not contain upgrades for your device.”
  6. Uninstalled and reinstalled HP Smart
  7. In the HP Smart Advanced settings where the Scan to Computer settings are located it used to say: " You cannot use this function because it has been disabled. For more information, contact the person who set up the printer." Now it just says: "It works!"
  8. Tried Diagnose & Fix → "Diagnosis complete and no issues were found. Check out these additional sources..."
  9. Tried to connect the printer via USB, still the same issues

Would be happy about any help/hints.

Thanks in advance,

Nico
