We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.

I have a HP Office Jet 5255 I used to log into the scanner through HP Smart. I can't get in now.  It seems unsupported.  The printer is still working fine, and I am loath to replace it, but sometimes I need the scanner.

Hi @MammothBarbara,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP OfficeJet 5255 scanner no longer works through HP Smart, even though the printer itself is fine. Let’s go through the steps to restore scanning functionality.

1. Verify HP Smart Support

Some older models like the 5255 may have limited support in newer HP Smart app versions.

Make sure your HP Smart app is updated to the latest version on your device.

On some systems, older printers can still print but scanning may no longer be supported through the app.

2. Use Alternate Scanning Methods

Windows PC

Open Windows Fax and Scan or Windows Scan.

Make sure the printer is connected to the same network as your PC.

Select HP OfficeJet 5255 as the scanner and test scanning.

Mac

Open Preview → File → Import from Scanner.

Select your 5255 if it appears on the network.

3. Use HP Scan Software (Full Feature Driver)

Go to HP Support → HP OfficeJet 5255 → Software & Drivers.

Download and install the Full Feature Software and Drivers.

After installation, open HP Scan on your computer to scan directly without using HP Smart.

4. Check Network Connection

Ensure your 5255 is on the same Wi-Fi network as the device you want to scan from.

Test printing to confirm the printer is recognized; network printing usually indicates scanning should work.

I hope this helps.
