I use the scanner a lot for my work but suddenly am unable to scan from the document feeder, only from the glass bed.  Tried all fixes I've found online.  Have done the usual unplug, turn off everything etc.  Am at a complete loss to know how to fix this - extremely frustrating!!

Put a few sheets in the scanner feed and try a scan from the printer control panel.  If you hear the gears startup but the paper does not feed then you need a paper feed roller kit.  if you hear nothing then the paper sensor is not working.

 

I assume you have windows.  If the problem is with HP Smart or HP Scan AND THE PC then reinstall the the full feature software.   I do not know what printer you have but some of the new "full feature software" no longer include OCR so you may want to reinstall the older software. 

You should  use the free REVO to do the uninstall as it can be instructed to scan the registry and remove all references in the windows registry of the printers settings.

 

After the reinstall I recommend you bring up  "printer and scanners" and prevent windows from managing the printer.  This is just a guess but I have had fewer problems when there are multiple printers.
