Well, I'm pleased for you that you have enabled Scan to Computer.
However, there ought to be a simpler solution than wiping one's hard drive and reinstalling Sierra from scratch!
I remain confounded by the fact that although my Mac does now show up on the printer's front panel (HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 Plus), my wife's Mac -- with identical spec's, and identical OS, and identical HP drivers and software -- does not.
I have tried every step imaginable, but to no avail (although HP Easy Scan does work on hers). I guess half a solution is better than none.

Well if you're like me, where you had already scanned everything into the hp scan application and would then be forced to scan the documents again using another application. If you don't want to do that, you may look into the option of printing to the pdf format. So just type "command + P" and after the print window pops up, go to the bottom left-hand corner where there is a dropdown (pdf is normally the default value) click the downward arrow and select "save as pdf", choose your location and voila!
Hope this helps!😃

Please don't take this the wrong way, but your post has nothing to do with this thread, which concerns the inability to initiate scans from the front panel of the printer using the "Scan to Computer" function.

For the HP6835 The Scan Button on the HPScann App is working again. It does seem like the Sierra update worked. I still can't use the "send" widget in the lower right corner (greyed out). I must "send" to the printer and then use the print dialog and use the "save" button drop down options. I still haven't gone through to make sure all of the firmware and software is abosulutly update and rebooted etc. perhaps this will fix everything.

I spent several hours working on this and finally figured it out:
Delete the HP scan drivers in /Library/Image Capture/
Re-installing the printer, reseting the print system, or running HP Easy Start will NOT delete the old Scanner driver. You have to delete the driver folder yourself.
