HP manufactures and sells thousands of printers.

 

HP Printers work in a variety of network environments,  work with different Operating Systems / versions, and support different types of applications and printer software.

 

When scanning does not work and you do not have any of the mentioned critical details , start with the basics.

 

For example,

 

  • HP Document - How to Scan

  HP Printers - How to Scan (Windows, Mac, Mobile) | HP® Customer Support

 

  • Restart everything -- If you can stand it, include the router that controls your network.

 

  • Check the printer EWS for entries in the Log.

This is more useful in a new printer of certain models that actually keep track of printer health in an ongoing basis.

 

  • Try a different Scan app or method.  This might help when the tool you are using is issuing errors without including a message that describes the error type.

 

  • If working with a Windows environment and using Scan at the printer (Scan to Computer), make sure that Manage Scan to Computer is enabled on the computer.  Use either the Printer Assistant or the Scan Assistant, depending on your printer model and vintage.

 

  • If using HP products, for example, HP Scan software or the HP Smart app to scan, there are various breakpoints that might generate error messages.  The type of error message and the content of the message can help determine where to look next for a solution.
