Hi @Meadow_2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When you encounter a message on your HP printer stating that the scanner is already scanning a previous item when it's not actually in use, there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.

  • Restart the Printer: Sometimes, simply restarting the printer can resolve temporary glitches. Turn off the printer, wait for about 30 seconds, and then turn it back on.
  • Restart Your Computer: If the issue persists after restarting the printer, try restarting your computer as well. This can help clear any communication errors between your computer and the printer.
  • Check for Physical Obstructions: Ensure that there are no physical obstructions or jammed paper inside the scanner area. Even a small piece of paper can sometimes trigger the scanner to report that it's busy.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause various issues, including incorrect status messages. Visit the HP support website, enter your printer model, and download the latest drivers for your operating system.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Similarly, outdated printer firmware can lead to functionality issues. Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model and install them according to the manufacturer's instructions.
  • Check Scanner Settings: Ensure that there are no settings on the printer's control panel or through the HP printer software that might be causing the scanner to remain in an active state.
  • Disconnect and Reconnect: Disconnect the printer from the power source and wait for a few minutes before reconnecting it. This can reset the printer and clear any temporary issues.
  • Factory Reset (if necessary): As a last resort, you can perform a factory reset on your printer. This will restore all settings to their default values. Note that this should only be done if other troubleshooting steps have failed, as it will erase any custom settings you have configured.

If none of these steps resolve the issue, it's possible that there could be a hardware problem with the scanner itself.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
