I did everything in your link and it did not solve the problem.  N.B. I did this before I got your response!  I am determined and thorough if nothing else!

Thanks to another frustrated Mac user’s post, I found I am at least able to scan using the Mac OS software, but not HP Smart.  The scans come out clear with the Mac software, and blurry with HP Smart. This is a problem with your software. 

After two years with this printer, the accompanying software is useless.  This is not up to my expectations of HP.
