Hi @spacedout1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Got it — before jumping into steps, let’s slow down and isolate what’s happening. A few things will help narrow this down:

  • Device details: Are you sending the fax through the HP Smart app on a phone/tablet, or directly from your HP LaserJet printer’s control panel? Some HP printers don’t have built‑in fax hardware, and the app uses an online fax service instead.
  • Fax capability: Since you mentioned the HP app, can you confirm whether your LaserJet 209dw itself has a physical fax function (phone line connection), or if you’re relying entirely on the HP Smart “Mobile Fax” feature? That distinction matters because the dialing rules differ.
  • Number formatting: You noted the app pre‑fills “+1” for USA. That suggests it expects international numbers in E.164 format (country code + number), not the local “0011” prefix. Did you try entering the full number after +1 without adding 0011?
  • Behavior observed: You said the fax has been “sending for hours.” Did the app show “In progress” continuously, or did it eventually fail with an error? That can tell us if it’s a dialing issue or a transmission problem.
  • Connection type: Is your app using Wi‑Fi/mobile data to send via HP’s cloud fax service, or are you trying to send through a phone line attached to the printer? The workflow is different.

Could you clarify those points? Once we know whether the printer itself supports fax hardware or if you’re using HP Smart’s Mobile Fax, we can figure out whether the issue is with number formatting, app behavior, or the device setup.

We're looking forward to helping you get back up and running!

Thank you.  I received a confirmation that the fax finally went through, waiting on a confirmation from the recipient.

Glad to hear your fax finally went through! That makes sense given how the HP Smart “Mobile Fax” service works. A couple of clarifications that might help if you send more faxes internationally:

Why 0011 Doesn’t Work

  • In Australia, 0011 is the traditional international dialing prefix when using a physical phone line.
  • The HP Smart app doesn’t use your local phone line—it sends via HP’s cloud fax service. That service expects numbers in international E.164 format.
  • E.164 format means: + + country code + area code + fax number.
  • For the USA, that’s always +1 followed by the 10‑digit number.

Correct Way to Enter the Number

  • Skip 0011 entirely.
  • Enter the fax number as:+1 [area code] [fax number] Example: +1 212 555 1234

Why It Took Hours

  • Sometimes the app shows “sending” for a long time if the recipient’s line is busy or if the transmission retries multiple times.
  • Once the confirmation arrives, it means the fax was successfully delivered through HP’s servers, not through your local dialing rules.

Tips for Next Time

  • Always use the + format, never 0011.
  • Double‑check the recipient’s fax line is active—many US businesses are phasing out fax machines.
  • If you need proof, the app provides a confirmation page you can save or forward.
