I can't get my printer to send faxes using the top feeder.  I always have to scan a page at a time in the flatbed.  Is there a setting I need to change to make this work?

Hi @Russell_Biblio,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I understand how inconvenient this is, having to scan one page at a time on the flatbed instead of using the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF) for faxing. The good news is that your HP OfficeJet Pro 9135e does support faxing from the top feeder, so this is usually a settings or hardware issue.

Step 1: Check ADF Functionality

  • Place a few sheets in the top feeder.
  • On the printer screen, select Copy or Scan.
  • If the printer pulls pages through, the ADF is working.
  • If not, clean the ADF rollers and check for jams.

Step 2: Use Fax Settings Correctly

  • On the printer touchscreen:
    • Tap Fax → Send Fax.
    • Load pages in the top feeder (ADF) face up.
    • Confirm the printer detects “Document Loaded in ADF.”
  • If it still defaults to flatbed:
    • Go to Fax Settings → Preferences → Scan Source and select Automatic Document Feeder.

Step 3: Update Firmware

Step 4: Reset Printer

  • Perform a power reset
    • Unplug printer while ON → Wait 60 seconds → Plug back in.
  • If settings are stuck, do a Semi-Full Reset
    • Power off → Hold # + 3 while plugging in the power cord.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
