HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e All-in-One Printer

I reinstalled the firmware but that did not fix it.  I am on Mac OS Sequoia 15.5. The button was there until a week ago when it disappeared.  so I can't scan.

@Saublestorm, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you restore the “Open Scanner” button for your HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e All-in-One Printer on macOS Sequoia 15.5:

Use HP Smart App for Scanning

Since the “Open Scanner” button is missing, the easiest workaround is to use the HP Smart app, which provides full scanning functionality.

  • Download or update HP Smart from the Mac App Store.
  • Open HP Smart > Click Scan.
  • If your printer is not listed, click Add Printer and follow the prompts.

This method bypasses the need for the “Open Scanner” button in System Preferences.

Reset Printing System (macOS)

Sometimes macOS updates or printer driver issues can cause UI elements to disappear.

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the printer list and choose Reset printing system.
  • Re-add your HP OfficeJet Pro 8135e.

This will remove all printers and scanners, so re-add any others you use.

Reinstall HP Drivers

Even though you reinstalled firmware, the issue may lie with the macOS scanner driver.

  • Visit the HP Support page.
  • Download and install the latest full feature software for macOS Sequoia 15.5.
  • Restart your Mac after installation.

Check Image Capture App

macOS includes Image Capture, which can access scanners even if the button is missing.

  • Open Image Capture (Applications > Image Capture).
  • Select your printer from the left panel.
  • Try scanning from there.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hp Smart App scanner is useless. I solved the problem by shutting off my laptop and the printer.  Restarted both, then deleted the printer from the printer page. Added it back and got the full use again. Problem was with Sequoia 15.5 and I found the solution on the Mac users page.
