Hi @jerry_CT,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If the fax component of your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer is damaged and you're unable to perform the fax test, here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot or resolve the issue.

Power Cycle the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait for about 30 seconds.
  • Plug the printer back into the power source and turn it on. This can sometimes resolve minor issues by resetting the printer's internal components.

Check Fax Connections:

  • Ensure that all cables connected to the fax line are secure and not damaged.
  • Verify that the phone cord is plugged into the correct port on the printer and the wall jack.

Reset the Printer:

  • Resetting the printer to its default settings might help resolve issues with the fax component. To reset:
    • Go to the printer's control panel or the HP Smart app.
    • Navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer has the latest firmware installed. Firmware updates can fix bugs and improve performance.
    • Use the printer's control panel or the HP Smart app to check for updates.

Check Fax Settings:

  • Verify that the fax settings (such as country/region settings, fax header, dialing options) are correctly configured.

By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and possibly resolve the fax issue with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
