Common problems HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to scan
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about HP Solution Center not working : Adobe Flash Player Error and Unable to Scan.
HP Recommended

A HP Laser Jet Pro MFP M130fn scanner has been in use with a 32-bit third-party application via Twain.

This application is being upgraded to a 64-bit application and the Twain drivers are being updated to 64-bit as well.

We haven't been able to get the scanner to show up as an available scanner on the 64-bit version of the application, but it works just fine for the 32-bit version. Can this specific model work with 64-bit drivers and applications?

It seems this model of scanner doesn't support 64-bit third-party applications. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @chrisf29

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

You're absolutely right to question the compatibility—this is a known limitation with the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fn when used with 64-bit third-party applications via TWAIN.

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fn does not support 64-bit TWAIN scanning. It was designed primarily for 32-bit TWAIN environments, and HP has not released a 64-bit TWAIN driver for this model.

Workarounds You Can Try

1. Use WIA Instead of TWAIN

  • If your 64-bit application supports Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), switch to that interface.
  • WIA is natively supported in Windows and may detect the scanner even if TWAIN does not.

2. Use HP Scan Software Separately

  • Scan using HP Scan or HP Smart software
  • Save the scanned file to disk and import it manually into your 64-bit application

3. Install a 32-bit Companion App

  • If your workflow allows, keep a 32-bit version of the app installed just for scanning
  • Use it to acquire scans via TWAIN, then transfer files to the 64-bit environment

Official Driver Info

You can find the latest drivers and supported scanning methods on HP’s official driver page for the M130fn.

If scanning is a critical part of your workflow and TWAIN is non-negotiable, you may need to consider upgrading to a newer HP model that explicitly supports 64-bit TWAIN drivers.

Hi @Hawks_Eye,

Thank you! I really appreciate your help with these questions and getting us back up and running.

This information is great to know and what we assumed was most likely the case. Thank you so much for the quick response and confirmation on the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fn scanner’s limitation with 64-bit third-party applications via TWAIN. This is very helpful and good to know.

Also, thank you for providing these workarounds we can try locally. We will definitely give these options a shot. However, due to our workflow processes, we may be leaning towards upgrading to a newer HP model that explicitly supports 64-bit TWAIN drivers and is similar to the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M130fn model. Do you have any suggestions on affordable options that would meet the above criteria? Would the HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdw model (HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdw Printer - HP® Store) be a possible solution for us?

Again, thank you very much for your detailed response and explanations! I appreciate this information and all your help.

You too! Take care and have a great day.

Thanks,

Thanks for sharing your thoughtful follow-up! It looks like you’ve handled the situation with professionalism and clarity—great job communicating both appreciation and your organization’s future needs.

Here’s a quick breakdown to help you with your next steps, particularly regarding the scanner TWAIN driver limitations and the potential upgrade:

Is the HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdw a Good Option?

Short answer: Yes, it's a good step up.

The HP LaserJet Pro MFP 3101fdw is a newer-generation printer and does support:

64-bit TWAIN-compliant scanning

Fast duplex printing and scanning

Wi-Fi and Ethernet

Compatibility with modern OS drivers (Windows 10/11, macOS, etc.)

Why it’s a good choice:

Fully supports 64-bit architecture (including drivers and software)

Compatible with newer 3rd-party scanning apps that require TWAIN x64

Offers similar form factor and functionality to the M130fn

Affordable and widely available

Note: Make sure to install the full HP Smart App or HP Easy Start package and not just the basic driver set, to get the TWAIN components.

Other Models Worth Considering (All support 64-bit TWAIN):

HP LaserJet Pro MFP M234sdw

Compact, efficient

Affordable

Reliable 64-bit TWAIN scanning

HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M283fdw

If you’re looking for color scanning/printing

Great scanning features and robust TWAIN support

HP LaserJet Enterprise MFP M430f

More enterprise-focused, but rock-solid TWAIN and driver support

Costlier, but longer lifespan

Best of luck with the upgrade—and well done on managing the transition smoothly!
