Hi @golfman1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're having trouble getting the scan function to work on your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-In-One Printer, here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

Check Connections:

  • Ensure that your printer is properly connected to your computer or network.
  • Make sure the printer is powered on and in a ready state.

Software Installation:

  • Confirm that you have installed the necessary software and drivers for your printer on your computer. You can usually find the software on the HP website.

Update Drivers:

  • Ensure that you have the latest drivers installed. Visit the HP website and download the latest drivers for your printer model.

Network Connection:

  • If your printer is connected to the network, ensure that both the printer and the computer are on the same network.

Check for Error Messages:

  • Look for any error messages on the printer's display or on your computer screen. These messages can provide valuable information about the issue.

Restart Devices:

  • Try restarting both your printer and your computer. Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues.

Test Scanning from the Printer:

  • Use the printer's control panel to initiate a scan directly from the device. This can help determine if the issue is with the printer or the computer.

Check Firewall/Antivirus Settings:

  • Ensure that your firewall or antivirus software is not blocking the communication between your computer and the printer.

Reinstall the Software:

  • Uninstall the printer software from your computer, restart the computer, and then reinstall the latest software and drivers.

Check Default Printer:

  • Make sure that your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 is set as the default printer on your computer.

Update Firmware:

  • Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer on the HP support website and update it if necessary.

Scan Doctor:

  • HP provides a tool called HP Print and Scan Doctor. Download and run this tool to automatically diagnose and fix printing and scanning problems.

Remember to consult your printer manual for specific instructions related to scanning and troubleshooting.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
