Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I can print just fine from my desktop computer.  If I use the printer to make a copy, it comes out black shaded and I am using the black copy button.  I did try to align the printer a couple of times and that didn't help.  Also only use HP printer ink.

Hi @SuzyQ24,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When your HP Envy 6055 prints black-shaded copies while using the copy feature, it typically indicates an issue with the scanner or copy function of the printer. Since printing from the desktop works fine, the problem is likely related to the scanning mechanism used during copying. Here are some common causes and troubleshooting steps:

Common Causes

Dirty Scanner Glass:

  • Dirt, dust, or smudges on the scanner glass can cause copies to come out with black shading.

Scanner Calibration:

  • The scanner might need recalibration to ensure it reads the document correctly.

Lighting Conditions:

  • Poor lighting conditions or glare can affect the scanner’s ability to properly read the document.

Firmware Issues:

  • Outdated firmware can sometimes cause unexpected printing or copying issues.

Hardware Problems:

  • There could be a hardware malfunction within the scanner unit itself.

Troubleshooting Steps

Clean the Scanner Glass:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
  • Open the scanner lid and use a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with glass cleaner to gently clean the scanner glass and the white strip on the underside of the scanner lid.
  • Dry the glass with a dry, lint-free cloth.

Check for Debris:

  • Inspect the scanner glass for any remaining debris or smudges and ensure it is completely clean.

Calibrate the Scanner:

  • Some HP printers have a scanner calibration feature. Refer to your printer’s user manual to see if this is an option and how to perform it.

Update Firmware:

  • Make sure your printer's firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or the HP support website.

Improve Lighting Conditions:

  • Ensure there is no direct light or glare on the scanner bed when making copies. Close the scanner lid completely.

Test Different Documents:

  • Try copying different types of documents (e.g., text, photos) to see if the issue persists across all types.

Reset the Printer:

  • Perform a hard reset on the printer by turning it off, unplugging it from the power source for about 60 seconds, and then plugging it back in and turning it on.

Check Copy Settings:

  • Ensure the copy settings on the printer are correctly configured. Sometimes adjusting the contrast or quality settings can help.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
