Hi @DN289,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your printer’s scanner carriage (copy head) is behaving inconsistently, moving fast without scanning, then scanning slowly on retry. This usually points to one of these issues:

Possible Causes

  • Scanner calibration error after power cycle or firmware update.
  • Dirty or obstructed scanner glass or encoder strip (affects speed and accuracy).
  • Firmware glitch causing the scanner to skip the first pass.
  • Low power supply or unstable voltage (especially if using extension cords or surge protectors).

Steps to Fix

1. Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it for 60 seconds.
  • Plug directly into a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors).
  • Turn it back on and try copying again.

2. Clean Scanner Glass and Encoder Strip

  • Open the scanner lid and clean the glass with a lint-free cloth and mild glass cleaner.
  • If accessible, gently clean the encoder strip (thin transparent strip near the scanner carriage) with a dry lint-free cloth.

3. Update Firmware

  • Use the HP app or the printer’s Embedded Web Server to check for updates. 👉 Official HP® Support

4. Reset Printer Settings

  • From the printer menu: Setup → Printer Maintenance → Restore Defaults.
  • Reconfigure Wi-Fi and preferences after reset.

5. Test Copy Settings

  • Try copying in Black & White and Color modes.
  • If the issue persists only in one mode, it may be a sensor or calibration problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
