So, I've read HP's reply to "Why is HP forcing people to create accounts in order to use their products?" Ok, so I believe you when you say your reasons are NOT nefarious. And I see that there are alternate drivers I can install (which I intend to do). BUT... I still want to proclaim my extreme irritation with the scan functionality. 

Ok, so here's the deal. I'm a grandparent and I do crafts with my grandkids. Often times we need to scan a picture in. Well, it so happens that my neighborhood doesn't have cable/internet (so I can't login to HP). I have a router in my house, so I can have both my computer and printer communicating with each other (but not to the outside world). So now I've got hardware sitting right here in front of me (that I paid for) that I can't use for scanning. My take on this is that your default software should have some method of bypassing the HP login!
