Windows 10 HP Smart 300dpi .PDF 10 pages takes FOREVER to save. Why? Don't know file size or its location because, after 20 minutes, it STILL hasn't finished Saving.

"Forever" likely means the job has failed to save to its destination.

The job must complete in its entirety -- there is no "partial save" part way through the process.

Job completion is dependent on the stability of the network connection, the amount of memory available in the printer for job processing, the type of connection to the network (in the case of this printer, Wireless or USB), the process and network usage load on the network, computer (or tablet / phone), and the amount of data in the ten pages.

If any one of the dependencies fails, the job is lost.

True - the software / app is not always aware of the problem and cannot cleanly exit.

Thanks for the quick response! Would you recommend Bluetooth over network connection to the printer/scanner? Should I save after every page, then merge them into one document later?How can I specify a "save files to" destination? (I've looked, & didn't see anything, even in the 'Save' dialog.)

I'm not aware that the printer supports Bluetooth as a singular connection.

Bluetooth is used by HP Smart during the initial connection setup for Mobile (and possibly Windows) devices.

In general,

2.4GHz is less fussy about obstacles and supports a longer distance (separation) between router and device (printer)
5GHz is faster

Depending on the use, you could reduce the scan size / quality.

Document scan a lower resolution will reduce the file size -- and yes, the quality will be less.

Might be "good enough".

Test one of the pages at a lower resolution to see what might work for you:

Scan the page, Save it, Print the page, and evaluate what you see on the paper.

You need software to merge documents -- built-in apps and software (for example) Adobe Reader DC do not generally support specialty actions. No, I don't have a favorite. I admit that should I need the option, I might simply purchase from one of the major players (companies) rather than trust my data to any free online app.

Selecting the Scan Save Destination depends on the application or software program you are using to scan and then save the data.

Example - HP Scan - Menu - More > Destination

Check the settings in Destination sub-menu File Type

Note that PDF scan is similar in terms of the general process
