Hi @UPC1,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the lines appearing on copies usually indicate an issue with the printer's scanning or copying mechanism. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot this problem with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978:

Clean the Scanner Glass and Rollers:

  • Open the scanner lid and clean the glass with a soft, lint-free cloth and a mild glass cleaner. Be sure to clean both the flatbed glass and the small strip of glass near the hinges.
  • Also, clean the white sheet of glass located on the scanner lid. Dust or debris on the scanner glass can cause lines or smudges on copies.

Check for Dirt or Smudges on the Document:

  • Ensure that the document you are copying is clean and free from smudges or dirt, as these can also cause lines in the copies.

Inspect and Clean the Printer Rollers:

  • If your printer has paper feed rollers, make sure they are clean and free from any debris or paper residue.

Perform a Print Head Alignment:

  • Sometimes misalignment of the print heads can cause issues with copies. Refer to the printer’s manual or settings menu to find and perform a print head alignment.

Check the Ink Cartridges:

  • Ensure that the ink cartridges are properly installed and have sufficient ink. Sometimes low or uneven ink levels can cause lines to appear on copies.

Update Printer Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Make sure that your printer's firmware is up-to-date. You can check for firmware updates through the printer’s control panel or the HP website.

Run Printer Diagnostics:

  • Use the printer's built-in diagnostic tools or the HP Print and Scan Doctor (available on the HP support website) to identify and resolve any hardware issues. HP Print and Scan Doctor
