Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP

I scanned a number of documents using the Smart HP Printer and I saved them to my desktop.  I then attached the documents to an encrypted  e-mail so they are no longer on my desktop.  Can I find these scanned documents anywhere else?  Were they saved anywhere else?
