defing key features of Scanjet 4600 driver

Dear Sirs! I want to know how unexperienced PC user can define driver especialties. it is known for me, that, simply speaking, an operating system needs drivers for the correct identification of devices. But I am interested in their main features. It caused by the following situation. I have no old PC and Scanjet 4600 has no drivers for modern versios of Windows . That is why I installed Windows XP and Vuescan software on virtual computer. Vmware workstation is used. But when the scanner is connected to the virtual machine, this software does not start. I wrote to Vuescan support and it was good, that I have not paid for this product. They wrote something like: "Send log file to us". Ok done. The logs are autocreated. They answered, that possibly the matter was in driver. I have changed or reinstalled it. After this changing I wrote once more. I was written, that they did know what the log, what the driver, and asked not to waste time. So, I want to know greatly, what could cause such reaction of ED. Hamrick from Vuescan.
